Jacob Shutz was born about 1730-1740 in Germany and died 1809 in Augusta County, Virginia. Jacob Shutz arrived in Pennsylvania on the ship, Snow Rowan, in 9-29-1753 from Rotterdam to Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
On the Snow Rowan, a Matthias Shutz is also listed. A Mattheus Schuz married Catherine Schneider on 8-11-1760 at the German Reformed Church in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania. However, the only mention of Jacob in Pennsylvania with another person named Schuetz was Mary Magdalena Schuetz who married George Peter Bock. A family legend states that two brothers came to Augusta County, Virginia from Pennsylvania. Another story (that I found on the Internet) is that three brothers, Jacob, Mathias, and Yost immigrated to America. Yost stayed in Pennsylvania, Jacob moved to Virginia and Mathias moved to North Carolina.
In Jacob�s will and other documents, he signed his name as Shutz. In the Pennsylvania German church records, the minister wrote his name as Schuetz.
Jacob�s first wife was Mary Veronica Edrisch who was born about 1730 in Pennsylvania and died prior to 1788 in Virginia. Veronica is alive in 1784 since she is mentioned in her father�s will. They were married on July 31, 1759 in Whitemarsh, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania by Reverend John George Alsentz. Jacob and Veronica�s eldest six children were born in Pennsylvania and baptized at Boehm�s Evangelical Reformed Church Cemetery, Whitepain Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. Veronica was the daughter of John Edrisch and Dorothy. John and Dorothy are buried at Boehm�s Evangelical Reformed Church Cemetery, Whitepain Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania. When Jacob and Veronica moved to Virginia from Pennsylvania they undoubtedly traveled on the main road that lead from Lancaster, Pennsylvania through Hagerstown, Maryland and then down into Winchester and Shenandoah Valley. They settled just to the north of Staunton near Mt Sidney, Virginia. Jacob and Veronica had two more children in Virginia.
Jacob�s second wife was Elizabeth Butt. Jacob and Elizabeth were married on July 2, 1789 Augusta County, Virginia. Elizabeth died before 1796 in Virginia.
Jacob marries for the third time to Elizabeth Player, a widow, in 1796. Elizabeth survived Jacob and died in 1818 in Augusta County, Virginia.
Jacob bought 300 acres of land on the branches of Naked Creek in Augusta County, Virginia on September 16, 1777 and was a resident of Augusta County, Virginia by 1781 since he was allowed a Revolutionary claim for furnishing supplies to the Augusta County Militia Court of Claim Book page 50 claim allowed 4-20-1782. He had 27 acres surveyed on 3-26-1785. This land was on the southwest side of Naked Creek and adjoined Jacob�s land. Jacob had 200 acres of land surveyed on 2-4-1791. This land bordered land he already owned. Jacob eventually owed 1159 acres of land on the waters of Naked Creek, Augusta County, Virginia
Jacob is listed In the Augusta County tax list of 1782. Jacob and son John are tithables in 1783. In the 1787 Augusta County, Virginia personal property tax list, Jacob is listed with 1 male over 16 and under 21, 7 horses, mules, and mares, and 16 cattle. His son John is listed in this tax list, but Jacob makes payment for him. He is also listed in the 1800 Augusta County tax list with two men over 21, (Jacob & son Henry), 5 horses and 2 slaves over 16.
Jacob had his land surveyed in 1802 and divided between his 6 sons by his first wife. Jacob also owned land in Fayette County, Kentucky on Eagle Creek, which he left to all seven sons to sell or divide. This land was owned jointly with John Sheets and was 2,481 � acres. The land was surveyed on 12-1-1786. The survey is listed in The Kentucky Land Grants Volume 1, Part 1 and Chapter II Virginia Grants (1782-1792) The Counties of Kentucky, page 119.
Jacob�s will was written 7-13-1803 and proved on 7-24-1809. On 6-27-1806, Jacob disowned his youngest son, Jacob Jr. In the selling of Jacob�s estate (6-21-1809) are listed two adult slave and five children, net value totaling $1250.
Jacob had nine children, he had two sons named Jacob, therefore I am assuming that the eldest Jacob died early, as the only mention of him is his baptismal record. Jacob and Veronica had 8 children while Jacob and his second wife had one chld.

First Generation

1. John Sheets was born 5-7-1760 Pennsylvania and died in 1823 Augusta County, Virginia. He was baptized at Boehm�s Evangelical Reformed Church Bluebell Pennsylvania. His sponsors were grandparents John and Dorothy Edrisch. John moved from the Pennsylvania colony to Augusta County, Virginia with his parents while he was a young man. He would have been a great help to his father on this move.

John is listed as a tithable in 1783 Augusta County, Virginia. John is also listed in the 1787 personal property tax list of Augusta County, Virginia. He is listed as the son of Jacob and Jacob is paying his tax. He is listed on the 1800 Augusta County, Virginia tax list with one male over 21 and 2 horses.
John bought land in Staunton, Augusta County, Virginia on 2-23-1802. John received 340 acres of land from his father, which included the house and all improvements. He bought land from his youngest brother, Jacob Sheets in 1817. John also jointly owned land in Kentucky with his father.
John gave money to the trustees of Salem Church. John was appointed Lieutenant in the 32nd Regiment, 7th Brigade and 3rd Division of the Augusta County, Virginia Militia on August 25, 1821.
I did not find a marriage record that would fit with John�s age, however in the settlement of his estate in 1823, it is clearly stated that the widow took her 1/3 of the estate. Frequently, John is listed with Susannah Ergelbright as his wife but in the resolution of John�s estate, John & Susannah Sheetz signed the estate settlement. In 1830, a Barbara Sheets appears in the census record plus Michael Sheets� death record list Barbara as being his mother�s name. Another John Sheets, who was listed as a carpenter, made his coffin.
John was listed as surety in the marriage bond for the following people, Henry, Peggy, and Catherine. The marriage bond of Henry states that John is the father of Henry. Michael�s death record listed John and Barbara as his parents.

2. Anna Margaret Sheets was born on 1-5-1762 Pennsylvania. She was baptized in 1762 at Boehm�s Evangelical Reformed Church in Bluebell, Pennsylvania. Her sponsors were Peter Bock and his wife Mary Magdalene Schuetz. Margaret moved from the colony of Pennsylvania to Augusta County, Virginia with her parents when she was a young woman. She would have been of great assistance to her mother and probably remembered this trip for the rest of her life.
Margaret inherited 20 pounds cash in her father�s will. Her husband was Garret Daulton. The only record I find of Margaret�s marriage is in her father�s will.
Garret is listed in the Fairfax County, Virginia 1787 personal property tax list with one horse, mare or mule and no sons over 16. Garret had 140 acres of land surveyed in Augusta County, Virginia on 6-19-1790. This land came from land granted to Jacob Sheetz on 11-1-1783. Garret owed money to his father-in-law when Jacob died.
In Jacob Sheetz� will, a granddaughter, Elizabeth Miller was mentioned. I am making the assumption that she was Margaret�s daughter. Their children were:

3. Jacob Sheets was born 6-14-1764 Pennsylvania and was baptized in 1764 at Boehm�s Evangelical Reformed Church in Bluebell Pennsylvania. The only record of this Jacob is his baptismal record so I assume that he died young. I am making this assumption since his father, Jacob, mentioned each of his children in the order of their birth in his will and he did not mention this son. The other major consideration is that Jacob�s youngest son is also named Jacob.

4. John Philip Sheets was born 9-27-1767 in Pennsylvania and baptized 1767 at Boehm�s Evangelical Reformed Church in Bluebell, Pennsylvania. His sponsors were Philip Schineberger and wife. Philip moved from the Pennsylvania colony to Augusta County, Virginia with his parents while he was a boy. He would have been old enough to help and this trip was probably the source of many stories told to his children and grandchildren. Philip died in 1853 in Augusta County, Virginia. When he died, Philip�s granddaughter, Elizabeth Landes Hulvey and her family were living with him.

His wife was Catherine Cupp. Catherine was born 1769 in Pennsylvania and died 4-1-1853 of debility in Augusta County, Virginia. Philip preceded her in death by a few months. Catherine was the daughter of Marcus Cupp and Margaret. Philip and Catherine were married on 5-26-1791 in Augusta County, Virginia.
Philip received 142 acres of land from his father. Philip is listed in the 1800 Augusta County, Virginia census with one male over 21 and 3 horses. Philip and Catherine were listed in the census records of Augusta County, Virginia for the years of 1810, 1820, 1830, 1840, and 1850. Philip and Catherine�s children

5. Daniel Sheets was born 3-30-1770 in Pennsylvania. He was baptized on 5-6-1770 at Boehms Reformed Church in Bluebell, Pennsylvania. His sponsors were Peter Bock and Mary Magdalena Schuetz Bock. Daniel moved from the Pennsylvania colony to Augusta County, Virginia with his parents while he was a young boy. Daniel died suddenly in 1816 Augusta County, Virginia.
Daniel married Elizabeth Whitemore on 3-27-1790 Augusta County, Virginia by William Wilson. Elizabeth was born 3-10-1769 and died 12-23-1849 Augusta County, Virginia. After Daniel�s death, Elizabeth married Adam Wise on 5-1827 by John Brown, D.D. Elizabeth is buried at Old Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery Augusta County, Virginia. Her tombstone lists the names of both of her husbands. I have been unable to find the grave of Daniel.

6. George Peter Sheets was born in Montgomery County, Pennsylvania on January 17, 1774. Peter was baptized on March 20, 1774 at Boehm�s Evangelical Reformed Church in Bluebell, Pennsylvania. His sponsors were Peter Bock and wife (Mary Magdalena Schuetz Bock). Peter moved from the Pennsylvania colony to Augusta County, Virginia with his parents while he was a young boy.
Peter married Catherine Eakle. Catherine was born on August 28, 1774 in Washington County, Maryland. Reverend Paul Henkel married them on March 3, 1796 in Augusta County, Virginia. Catherine was the daughter of Christian Eakle (Ekel) who died in 1802 in Washington County, Maryland. In their marriage record, Christian is listed as being German.
In 1809, Peter received 142 acres of land from his father and farmed in Augusta County, Virginia for the rest of his life. In 1842, Peter sold 157 � acres of land to his son Peter Jr. Peter and Catherine spent their entire lives living in Augusta County, Virginia where raised six children.
Peter was listed in the following census and tax records. He is listed in the 1800 tax list Augusta County, Virginia with one male over 21 and 2 horses. Peter and Mary were listed in the census records of 1810, 1820, 1830, and 1840 living in Augusta County, Virginia. In the 1850 census records of Augusta County, Virginia, Peter is living with his son Peter and is listed as George P. Sheets. In 1870 son Peter Jr claims that mother was born in Maryland and father born in Pennsylvania.
Peter died on July 7, 1850 in Augusta County, Virginia and Catherine died prior to 1850 in Virginia. I do not know where Peter or Catherine are buried.

7. Andrew Sheetz was born about 1780-1784 probably in Virginia. Andrew was probably baptized but I have not found the record. His wife was Catharine Sermabough who was born between 1780 and 1784. Andrew and Catharine were married on 9-23-1799 in Augusta County, Virginia. The sureties were Jacob Sheetz and her father, John Sensibough (Sermabough), brother Peter Sermabough, brother John Sensibough, and sister Elizabeth Lightner.
In 1809, Andrew received 193 acres of land from his father. He sold part of this land to his brother Jacob Sheets in 1810 for $400.00. Andrew and Catherine both signed this deed. On 7-9-1832, Andrew sold 53 acres of land to his brother Jacob Sheets. Andrew signed this deed but Catherine did not sign. I lost contact with Andrew after the 1830 census.
From the census records, Andrew and Catherine had many children. I used the census records for their ages. Andrew and Catherine were listed in the 1800 tax list of Augusta County, Virginia with 1 male over 21 and 2 horses. Andrew and Catherine were listed in the census records of 1810, 1820, and 1830 living in Augusta County, Virginia. 8. Henry Sheets was born 2-2-1780 in Augusta County, Virginia and died 8-13-1856 in Delaware County, Ohio. Henry�s wife was Sarah Reese who was born 10-22-1786 Augusta County, Virginia and died 7-30-1857 Ohio. John Brown, D.D. a Lutheran minister in Augusta County, Virginia married them in 1804.
Henry appears in the 1810, 1820, and 1830 census records of Augusta County, Virginia census records and then he moved to Delaware County, Ohio. Henry and Sarah were listed in the census records of 1850 living in Kingston Township, Delaware County, Ohio. Living with them were Lydia Wallace born 1826 and her daughter Mary E. Wallace age 1
Henry inherited 142 acres of land from his father. On 2-21-1831, Henry guaranteed a loan for Solomon Sheets. On 9-1832, Henry sold land in the town of Morrisville, Virginia.
Henry moved to Delaware County, Ohio with most of his sons and daughters in the 1830s. Henry and Sarah are buried Old Eden Cemetery, Brown township, Delaware County, Ohio.
Two of his daughters list Henry as their father in their marriage records. One son, John, who moved to West Virginia, has descendents who claim that John is the son of Henry. Names of the other children are from a descendent of Henry Sheets Jr who moved to Ohio.

9. Jacob Sheetz was born about 1789 in Augusta County, Virginia and died in July of 1862 in Augusta County, Virginia of dropsy. Dropsy is the abnormal accumulation of serous fluid in the body.

In his father�s will, Jacob was to receive 400 pounds cash from his father. At a later date, his father disowned him, reason unknown. His father changed the 400 pounds to 5 pounds. After his father�s death, Jacob�s brothers gave him 1000 dollars Virginia money.
Jacob married Catherine Smith on July 3, 1810 in Augusta County, Virginia by Reverend William King. Reverend King was an Episcopalian. Jacob�s last name was misspelled as Sweetz. Catherine was born 1791 in Virginia. In a handwritten document by Henry Coffman, Catherine�s name was listed as Catharina.
Jacob and Catherine are listed in the census records of 1820, 1830, 1840, 1850, and 1860 living in Augusta County, Virginia. Jacob was always listed as a farmer. Living with them in 1820 was an older female aged 45+. Living with them in 1860 was L. W. Sheets (male) born 1845, M. J. Kline (female) born 1849, and S. Sheets age 15
Jacob bought land from his brother, Andrew Sheetz on August 27, 1810 for $400.00 Virginia money. This was some of the land that Andrew received from his father. Jacob sold this same land to his brother, John Sheets in 1817 for $600.00 Virginia money. Jacob also bought 53 acres of land from Andrew Sheets on February 9, 1831. Jacob signed his name Sheetz and Catherine made her mark. Jacob and Catherine lived in Augusta County, Virginia where they farmed and raised a large family of ten children. 11. John Sheetz was born 1775-94 in Virginia and died 1842 in Augusta County, Virginia. His will was proved on 1-2-1842 in Augusta County, Virginia. John had 402 acres of land to divide amongst his sons. His name was spelled as Sheetz part of the time and also as Sheets.
His wife was Susanna Ergelbright who died 12-21-1850 Augusta County, Virginia. John and Susannah were married 5-1810 in Augusta County, Virginia.
In 1823, John and Susannah sign the settlement of his father�s estate. John was a carpenter and made a coffin for his father in 1823. On 7-11-1845, Susan owed money to Jacob Sheetz, Peter Sheets and William Shoemaker and if she doesn�t pay them, John Sheets Jr will sell some of her property and pay them. John and Susannah�s children �

12. Michael Sheetz was born 1794 in Augusta County, Virginia and died 8-1856 Augusta County, Virginia of apoplexy. His first wife was Elizabeth Skile. Michael and Elizabeth were married 4-13-1820 in Augusta County, Virginia. His second wife was Mary Magdalena Skile. She was born 1792 Pennsylvania and died 1860-1870 Augusta County, Virginia. During the Civil War, Peter sympathized with the Union and sent all of his sons to Indiana to keep them out of the Confederate Army. His eldest son, George moved to Indiana in 1861, his second son, David moved to Indiana in 1863 and his youngest son moved to Indiana in 1864. During Sheridan�s Campaign thru the Shenandoah Valley, Peter lost six horses, 10 sheep, and had his barn and all its contents burned by the Union Army. After the Civil War, Peter filed a claim asking for payment for these items but the claim was denied until 1901 when his estate was finally compensated for his loss. However, this claim recorded valuable material about the whereabouts of his sons during the Civil War.

As happened in many families of this period, the eldest daughter never marries. She was the daughter who stayed home with her parents and as they grew old, she became their caregiver. Mary lived with her parents until their death and then she lived with her brother, William Sheets.

92. Heinrich Sheets was born December 22, 1813 in Augusta County, Virginia and died April 16, 1889 in Grove Church, Augusta County, Virginia. He was married twice and raised five children in partnership with his first wife. Henry spent his early years working as a farmer and then became a shoemaker. He was listed in the census records as a shoemaker for thirty years.

Henry�s first wife was Mariah Lambert. Mariah was born 1804 in Virginia and died prior to 1879 in Augusta County, Virginia. Henry and Mariah were married Augusta 21, 1834 at Grove Chapel, Augusta County, Virginia. Both are listed as illiterate in the 1850 census. He did however like to travel and frequently went to Washington D.C. to go sight seeing.
His first wife was Sarah Christina Houff who was born May 19, 1853 Augusta County, Virginia and died May 31, 1906 Augusta County, Virginia of colon cancer. David and Sarah were married 8-10-1869 at Mt Sidney by Christian Beard in Augusta County, Virginia. Sarah was the daughter of William Abraham Houff and Susan Christina Rebecca Link.
David�s second wife was Mary Ella Furr. They were married 11-1906 in Augusta County, Virginia. Ella remarried to George W. Brown on 11-27-1926 in Augusta County, Virginia.
David is buried Mt Pisgah Cemetery Augusta County, Virginia and Sarah is buried Salem Lutheran Church Cemetery Augusta County, Virginia. Mt Pisgah Cemetery was not a Lutheran cemetery and Sarah�s family was offended when she was originally buried there. David moved her remains to Salem Lutheran Cemetery to appease her family not because of marital difficulties.

After they were married, they boarded a train and traveled west to Robert�s farm in Poweshiek County, Iowa. Bob and Ella spent their entire married life living on this farm. Their three sons were born and raised in the farm house.
Robert Sheets was born March 4, 1871 in Augusta County, Virginia. Robert moved to the Midwest in the late 1800�s and worked on several farms in Illinois and Iowa. He was taking the train to Nebraska when it stopped in Brooklyn, Iowa. Robert liked the looks of the area, found work on a local farm and decided to make Brooklyn his home. In 1900, Bob was living in the Bear Creek Township of Poweshiek County, Iowa. He was working as farm labor and living with Albert Davidson. Bob bought a farm south of Brooklyn, Iowa and farmed there until he died. In 1910 and 1920, Bob and Ella were living in Scott Township of Poweshiek County, Iowa.
Robert died suddenly on 3-11-1929 Poweshiek County, Iowa. Robert had prostate cancer and died suddenly in the basement of his home while attending to the furnace. Wayne was the eldest child of three sons. He attended country school and then went to high school in Brooklyn, Iowa. At first, he and his brothers traveled to school in a horse and buggy. They were responsible for putting the horse into a stable for the day and taking care of the horse while they were at school. In 1922, their father bought a car, and they drove to school. Wayne graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1927.
Wayne farmed with his father and then with his brother Raymond. Wayne and Raymond bought their parent�s farm and later bought another farm together. Raymond lived on the home farm and Wayne lived on the second farm. Wayne farmed all his life and retired from farming in 1978.
He married Mary Daisy Downing on 2-6-1937 in Detroit, Michigan. Mary was born on 10-7-1910 in Green City, Sullivan County, Missouri. Mary was born and raised in Sullivan County, Missouri. They met while she was working for a farm couple in Poweshiek County, Iowa. Wayne was working for them at the same time as the hired man. Mary was the daughter of David Arthur Downing and Laura Alma Croft.
Wayne died October 1, 1980 at Grinnell General Hospital, Grinnell, Poweshiek County, Iowa. He died of prostate cancer and its complications. Mary died on February 27, 2006 of colon cancer and its complication. Wayne and Mary are buried at the City Cemetery in Brooklyn, Iowa. She lived at Brookhaven Nursing Home in Brooklyn, Iowa for many years. They had four sons.

653213. James Dwight Sheets was born 12-8-1944 at the Grinnell General Hospital in Grinnell, Poweshiek County, Iowa. Dwight attended the rural school near his home in Poweshiek County from kindergarten thru seventh grade. He then transfered into the town school in Brooklyn, Iowa. Dwight graduated from Brooklyn High School in 1963 where he participated in track and football.
Jim joined the United States Army and served a tour of duty in Pakistan and then two tours of duty in Vietnam. When he left the military, he returned to Vietnam and worked as a civilian contractor. When he had earned enough money, he returned to Iowa to attend college. He attended William Penn College in Oskaloosa, Iowa for one year and then transferred to Iowa State University. Jim graduated from Iowa State University in 1974 with a B.S degree in Electrical Engineering.
His wife is Anna Marie Crouch who was born 9-28-1950 Muncie, Indiana. She is the daughter of James Weldon Crouch and Ramona Elaine Weakley. Jim and Ann met when he attended William Penn College. They were married 3-9-1974 at the Nazarene Chruch in Dunkirk, Jay County, Indiana.
After graduation, Jim took employment with Westinghouse Corporation. Westinghouse transferred him to Shiraz, Iran where Jim and Ann lived for two years. The job moved to Bushehr, Iran and Jim and Ann moved to this port city where they lived for one year. While living in Bushehr, Ann worked for a local company as a teacher for the American children living in Bushehr. The Middle East was totally different from anyplace that Jim or Ann had lived before or since.
When they returned from Iran, Jim and Ann lived in several different locations: Baltimore, Maryland, Layton, Utah, and Shrewsbury, Pennsylvania. In 1985, they moved to the Cedar Rapids, Iowa area and have lived in Toddville, Iowa since that time.
Ann graduated from William Penn College in 1973 with a B.A. degree in secondary education and received her Masters from the University of Northern Iowa in 1998 in educational technology. Their children are:
